Qingpu Children's Tooth Decay Treatment

Early childhood caries treatment

Primary teeth will be replaced anyways, why bother to treat the decays?

Tooth decay is common in children and, if left untreated, can affect the development of permanent teeth and overall oral health.

At Kidsmile Dental Clinic, we offer a complete care programme that includes gentle behaviour management. Using positive reinforcement, distraction techniques and pre-treatment preparation, we help children feel relaxed and confident during their dental visits.

Childhood Decay Treatment Programme at Kidsmile

1. Fillings

  • Resin or glass ionomer materials are used to meet children’s functional and aesthetic needs.

2. Root Canal Treatment

  • For baby teeth: Removes infection to preserve the tooth’s role until the permanent tooth erupts.

  • For young permanent teeth: Treats deep decay or trauma to relieve pain and keep the tooth healthy.

3. Crowns

  • Stainless steel crowns: Durable and fast to apply — ideal for high-risk or severely decayed baby teeth.

  • All-ceramic crowns: Natural-looking and strong, perfect for front teeth or aesthetic zones.

4. Space Maintainers

  • Unilateral maintainers: Keep the space open if a baby tooth is lost early.

  • Bilateral or connected types: Stabilise the bite when several teeth are missing.

  • Kiddy dentures: Restore aesthetics and function after early front tooth loss, preserving space for adult teeth.

Sedation Options (if needed)

If your child finds it difficult to cooperate due to anxiety or complex needs, we offer safe sedation:

  • Laughing gas (nitrous oxide): Helps mildly anxious children relax with quick onset and recovery.

  • IV sedation: Overseen by a professional anaesthetist for deeper sedation during longer or more complex procedures.

At Kidsmile, we tailor every treatment to each child’s needs, providing safe, comfortable and effective care — helping young patients grow up with healthy, happy smiles.

Children's dental fillings

When are fillings needed?
  • Small, early-stage cavities on the tooth surface

  • Decay near the gum line

The dentist will decide based on your child’s specific needs.

Common Filling Materials

Composite Resin

✔ Matches natural tooth colour

✔ Bonds well with the tooth, preserving more healthy structure

Glass Ionomer Cement

✔ Releases fluoride to help prevent future decay

✔ Quick and simple — ideal for young children who may struggle to sit still

The dentist will choose the most suitable material depending on the situation.

Yes, even children may need a root canal!

Paediatric root canal treatment is used when the nerve (pulp) of a baby tooth or a newly erupted permanent tooth becomes infected or inflamed. It removes the damaged tissue, cleans the area, and seals the root to keep the tooth functional and stop the pain from spreading.

When is it needed?
  • Deep cavities that reach or affect the nerve

  • Pulp inflammation causing ongoing pain

  • Tooth injury that exposes or damages the nerve

Special care for children
  • Behaviour management: Gentle techniques like distraction and positive reinforcement help children feel at ease.

  • Sedation options: Laughing gas or monitored sedation ensures a smooth and comfortable experience.

  • Pain relief: Children’s painkillers are recommended after treatment to ease discomfort.

Kidsmile ensures that every child receives safe, caring, and effective root canal treatment when needed.

Primary tooth crowns

Why do children need crowns on baby teeth?

When a baby tooth is badly decayed, a crown may be needed to keep it in place until the adult tooth is ready to come through. Crowns help protect the tooth, support chewing, and keep space for the permanent tooth.

When is a baby tooth crown needed?
  • Large or multiple cavities that cannot be filled

  • Weak or broken baby teeth

  • After root canal treatment on a baby tooth

Stainless Steel Crowns

Pre-made metal crowns used to protect damaged baby teeth.

✔ Pros:

  • Very durable and strong

  • Quick to fit

  • Lower cost

✘ Cons:

  • Silver colour is not very aesthetic

  • Rare risk of metal allergy

All-Ceramic (White) Crowns

Tooth-coloured crowns made of ceramic, offering both looks and strength.

✔ Pros:

  • Matches natural teeth in colour and shine

  • Gentle on gums and very biocompatible

  • Strong enough for children’s chewing

✘ Cons:

  • Higher cost than metal crowns

Important tip:

Don’t worry—whether metal or ceramic, baby crowns will naturally fall out with the baby tooth when the time comes.

At Kidsmile, we help protect your child’s smile by choosing the right crown and restoring baby teeth in a gentle and effective way.

What is a Space Maintainer?

A space maintainer is an orthodontic device used to keep the gap open after a baby tooth is lost too early. It prevents nearby teeth from shifting into the empty space, allowing the adult tooth to grow in the correct position.

When is a Space Maintainer Needed?
  • Baby teeth lost too soon due to decay or injury

  • Several baby teeth missing at once

  • Limited space in the mouth, increasing the risk of crowding or crooked adult teeth

Benefits
  • Keeps space for adult teeth to grow properly

  • Prevents teeth from moving or tilting into the wrong position

  • May reduce the need for braces later on

  • Custom-made to fit each child’s mouth and needs

How to Care for It
  • Visit the dentist regularly to check that it fits well and stays clean

  • Brush and floss teeth and the device gently every day

  • If it becomes loose or broken, see the dentist straight away

At Kidsmile, we provide personalised space maintenance to help guide your child’s teeth into proper alignment and support healthy dental development.
